A Drawing Because I Couldn't Sleep: The Balancing Act
7:35am

Sharpie pen on 11x14in bristol board

I felt so many restless currents flowing through the ether last night. Sorrow over terroristic murders, anticipation of family reunions for Father's Day, joyous Solstice celebrations, joyous weddings, the astral was full of many "broadcasting stations".

So I did what I so often do to sort my mind out. Julia and I discussed this drawing. The middle figure is an adult, perhaps a priest figure. He seems to be the voice of faith. He balances himself on the entity who is carrying him, a representation of Deity. (Insert your Diety name here.) I find this Biblical verse applicable here: "But those who hope in the LORD will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint." (Isaiah 40:31, NIV) The man of faith is soaring on wings.

And who is the child? Julia noted his Spock-like ears, and the emphasis on a large brain. Perhaps this is the child of reason. He is still a child. And so we do things with reason and science that are bumbles. We exploit fossil fuels to the earth's peril, for instance. But what will happen when the child grows up? Will he realize the many supports upon which he rests? Will he realize that all his inventions must serve a larger cause? If they harm, further injustice, or only feed ego, these inventions should not be pursued. The child is learning and has far to go.
