"Encircled: Excerpts from the Book of the Dead"
A knot was knotted around me by Set
A knot was knotted around me by Nut
From spell 50b in the Book of the Dead |
Of course I'd already made a few changes in the transcription of the quote because Set (aka Setesh or Sutekh) had been referred to in the Greek mode "Seth". The sound of that name seems greatly weakened to me, as if those who used that name in Greco-Roman times wished to weaken the deity's potency. "Set" may also be a shortened name, albeit more true to the ancient Egyptian (as far as we know). As I hand wrote the quote, I felt the need of Set's full name. I started off with 'Set', so I'd made it 'Setesh'. But as I worked with the digital version, I kept hearing 'Sutekh', so by the wonder that is Photoshop, voila, my image can appear as if that's the way it had been hand-scribed. In case all our attempts to pronounce the deities names are completely off, I've included the hieroglyphs. For the rope-y cartouche, I used the cartouche around Seti II's name as it appears on a faience tile at the Metropolitan Museum. |
