A Mysterious Puzzle

On the sixth day, Chloe finally awoke with some degree of strength. she felt surprisingly good, like all her burnt innards had healed. There was just thing wrong: She was still as white as before she'd begun her trials. ''You'd think there'd be some sign of blueness, at least a tinge of blue. You don't see any blue, do you Kaaldar?''

He admitted that, indeed, her skin was as pale and pink as the first day they'd met.

By the seventh day she still had not moved the tiniest tinge towards blueness. She was angry, and she stomped off to the High Mages' Offices. Kaaldar had to nearly run to keep up.

She stormed past the high podium, into the small room. Necro-man was there, and she had to admit, a little startled by her appearance. ''Whyddya DO? Boil my blood, and bake my bones for your amusement? How come I'm not blue?'' Chloe shouted, while she tore off her robe to reveal all of her paleness.

This time, necro-man rushed to find her a gray robe. He stammered as he handed it to Chloe. ''It must be the work of an enchanter, a great spell. For your initial blood test reveals you were never pure High Elf! You have some Dark Elven in you to begin with. For one thing, the recorded history of all the changlings reveal nearly all of them died under the strain of the first application!''

He called out to an especially thin young man, ''Go get the High Enchantress, immediately! She must know something about this!''

Smiling necro-man wasn't smiling anymore. He was as angry as she was. That was some comfort.
