This Difficult Thing

There was still no convincing Momma to travel, so Chloe and Kaaldar ended up going to the Greater Faydark. Thus, they found themselves waiting on the Luclin moon for a transport there. They'd handle the problems as they occurred. Hopefully Momma could be lured away from Felwithe once they arrived.

The moon's transporter did its magical thing, and they found themselves at the wizard's spires in Greater Faydark. They had to know what the guards thought of them, so Kaaldar made each of them invisable and they tip toed as closely as they dared.

Letting loose of the invisability, they gave them a close look. Yes, the guards were scowling and ready to attack. So they slinked back down the path, far away. Fortunately, Chloe had thought to bring her farspeaker . . .

''Eh, Momma, we've got a problem,'' Chloe began cautiously. ''What's that?'' the eager Momma asked. ''There are some RATHER UNFRIENDLY guards at the entrance to the city . . . Could you come outside?''

''HUH? UNFRIENDLY guards? What the? Okay . . ,'' Momma relented.

''What the heck has Chloe gotten herself into? Unfriendly guards?'' Momma thought, as she began the exit, a queasy feeling in the pit of her stomach forming.

It grew, as she headed down the path that led to Lesser Faydark. There was no one there, however. ''Spooky . . ,'' Momma said out loud.

''Hello, Momma,'' ventured an invisable Chloe. Her mother spun around, trying to find her. ''I'm here . . ,'' Chloe reassured her.

''Well, show your face, then . . ,'' Momma insisted. ''I will . . ,'' Chloe's voice trailed, as she tried to figure out what she'd say next.

''Damn it, show me, or do I have to strip your spells off you one by one?'' Momma said, expecting an ugly tattoo or two.

''Ugly fashion of the day, those tattooes. However High Elves have more sense than that. It's those Barbarians, with their messed up faces . . ,'' Momma thought, puzzled.

''I can explain . . ,'' Chloe insisted.

''Well, explain!'' Momma shouted, beginning to lose her patience.

''Well, you know way back when I was born, do you remember a certain Wood Elf Bard . . ,'' Chloe began, taking a deep breath first.

''How? How! How did you heard of . . ,'' Momma said, beginning to freak. This was her guarded secret which no one knew, except for the bard and his gypsy mother.

Getting to the point, Chloe continued, ''Well that Wood Elf Bard wasn't a Wood Elf Bard!''

''Ulp! Huh??'' Momma said, her mind reeling under the possible meaning.

''Without a certain very powerful enchanter's spells, you would have seen my skin always has been rather BLUE . . ,'' Chloe said, with some relief that the truth was finally coming out.

''Well, now, Momma, it's just a little bluer than that . . ,'' Chloe said, an invisible smile on her lips.

''Huh????,'' Momma replied, her eyes bulging.

''BLUE, you say?'' still not quite getting it. Then, beginning to get it, she added, ''I feel weak, I gotta sit down . . .''

''It's okay, Momma,'' Chloe gently urged.

''Blue . . . Blue . . . BLUE! Damn that charming Wood Elf! I'm sick to my stomach . . . BLUE!'' Momma said, finally understanding.

''It's not so bad as all that, Momma. Really, it isn't. Don't be afraid . . ,'' Chloe tried to soothe her.

''I suppose your boyfriend is blue, too . . ,'' Momma said, understanding growing still further.

''Yes, Momma, he is,'' Chloe replied, with a bit of a proud smile that could not be seen.

''Ei-i-i-i! What we gonna do? Your Father wants to see him!'' Momma said, starting to panic.

''Well, that High Enchanter happens to be my grandmother. Maybe she can give us a group illusion. We could invite her to the family gathering, as she WAS the mid wife at my delivery . . ,'' Chloe said, growing more confident of a solution.

''Yeah, gyspy lady, HAH!'' Momma said angrily.

''Well, she did tell me how you couldn't be memory blurred, as your bond with me was too strong. You're one special Momma . . ,'' Chloe said, wanting to hug her.

''Yeah, I guess I am,'' Momma weakly laughed.

''BLUE!'' she said once again, in utter amazement, ''Blue!''

''Come here, blue daughter, give me a hug!'' Momma said, wanting to SEE her daughter, blue or not.

Chloe shed the invisibility spell, and shyly came to her Mother.

''Well, you don't look as bad as all that. At least you don't have an ugly tattoo!'', Momma laughed, still weakly, but resigned. They hugged, both relieved.
