A Basic Exploration/Explanation II
April 9, 2010

One day while exploring Ancient Egyptian things on Wikipedia, I noticed a link to Kemetic Orthodoxy and took a read of what was presented there. I share a few things in common with the Kemeticists.

I do agree with 'upholding Ma'at' as a proper goal of evolving beings, Ma'at being "an abstract concept of balance, justice and truth."

The scholar Jan Assman defines Ma'at as "connective justice". I like to see the connections, and so for me "Participation in and Respect for the Community" is a natural part of life. I could never be fulfilled by being a hermit.

I am surprised to find that I do a sort of "Akhu (Ancestor) Veneration". Merriam-Webster gives for 'veneration' the meaning 'respect or awe inspired by the dignity, wisdom, dedication, or talent of a person'. This is not 'worship. I'm not sure that it's keeping them "happy and satisfied in the Duat". But I like to remember my ancestors and worthy people who have passed on. Some of that rememberance ends up as attempts at portraiture, (not all those attempts are of those who's passed on, just of interesting people). As the Egyptians say "That which is remembered lives . . ." (From the Book of the Dead)

But after these commonalities, I begin to diverge. The Kemeticists hold to "Belief in Netjer (the supreme being)". This is where it gets complicated for me. "Belief" is a concept which of its very nature involves dogma. Yes, Merriam-Webster declares "belief may or may not imply certitude in the believer", and gives to "Faith" this certitude.

Rather than 'belief', I would say I've had 'experiences', which I don't fully understand, but that any doubt I have does not diminish or disable the experiences. That/Who which I experience as 'Set' hasn't been scared off by doubt.

Meanwhile if the godforms were only 'principle of' or 'archetype', just that alone would give me enough resonance for the way Egyptology mythology works together. Every Godform has their task to do that together brings about Ma'at.

I prefer to strive towards “best possible premises” in my understanding, which can always undergo analysis and revision.

In this analysis so far, I have a good deal of commonality with the Kemeticists. But from there on, I really diverge. They assert their leader is 'Nisut' because she has the 'Kingly Ka', defined as "the essence of kingship", "one owning authority."

For me as a Setian, this 'Kingly Ka' is a worthy goal of the 'Willed Conscious Evolution' (aka 'Xeper'), for all who awaken and strive to actualize this in their lives. The quest for sovereignty leads to a personal self-determination, in which all our actions are inner-directed.
As the Pyramid Texts explain:
"The king combines Horus and Seth in his person", "the two in the palace - that is, Horus and Seth" (_The Ancient Egyptian Pyramid Texts_, translated by James P. Allen, Peter Der Manuelian, pages 31, 62)

The wise sovereign seeks 'rulership in the inner world' and 'rulership in the outer world'

In the artwork above, based on Horus and Set blessing the pharoah, I replaced the pharaoh with the hieroglyph for ‘lord of transformation’, to suggest Set and Horus blessing those on the quest for Sovereignty and the Xeper gained by this quest, or more precisely the balance within such a person of Setian inner-world rulership and Horian outer-world rulership.

Again, Ma'at, or balance, within ones self is the goal.

"Rulership of the Inner World means a sense of reality and purpose in what one does." (_Uncle Setnakt's Guide_, By Don Webb, page 4) It is through introspection and intuition that we come to know our True Will. We have to listen to ourselves to find this. The awakened being eschews all the mind-numbing possibilities modern society offers, via popular media. The awakened being strives for mindfulness, strengthening consciousness, becoming more aware of one's self in each moment. She finds the essence of herself and grows more herSelf each day. She finds within herSelf a deep well of strength. For me, realm of Set expresses itself mostly in the pure joy of the raw moment of creation, and in the triumphant 'A HA!' of discovery.

Moving towards what "rulership of the outer world" means, what does the awakened person see when she looks outwards? How does she interact with all she comes into contact? Moving from the inner realm which is of Set, to the outer realm which is of Horus takes the wisdom of Thoth to bring one's authentic Essence to interact to best possible outcome in the world at large. What does the awakened being wish to accomplish in the world? With introspection, having found our True Will, we do not succumb to false expectations handed to us by society. Those 'remotely controlled' by the media may come under the illusion that accumulation of wealth is the mark of the accomplished being. But is that wealth necessary to what we want to accomplish? If it is, then the challenge is how we shall obtain it.

But perhaps our conquest doesn't lie there. Perhaps knowledge is our aim. Perhaps broadening our experiences in the realm of travel is our aim. Or testing our skill at creative expression, to see what we can produce. The possibilities are vast, and each individual evolving Sovereign has her own unique realms in which to try her influence.

Furthermore, I consider the role of the pharoah in ancient times. His primary goal was upholding Ma'at.

Rameses II Offering Maat

I consider all the ways the wise sovereign does this, through mundane and magical means. How can we strengthen Ma'at in our communities? We see injustice does to animals, and so we fight for animal rights. We see a world in ecological imbalance, so we strive to lessen our ecological footprint. I may not be able to do much, but what little I do increases Ma'at.

With imagination, all sorts of leadership possibilities can be envisioned.

As Gandhi said, "We must be the change we wish to see in the world."

It always, ever begins with ourselves. And so the balance returns to the inner world.

"Horus purifies and Set strengthens, and Set purifies and Horus strengthens"*, as the ancients held, and so the two realms must inform each other.

(Exact quote found at touregypt.net, without attribution. However, I found similar in the Pyramid Texts, spell 455: "O ... see the purification of my father this king as one purified with zmn and with natron, the saliva which issued from the mouth of Horus, the spittle which issued from the mouth of Seth, wherewith Horus is purified..." (_The Mechanics of Ancient Egyptian Magical Practice_, by Robert Ritner, page 82)

The two realms inform each other, if we seek the wisdom of Thoth. Are we acting in the world with our best Essence? For those on the Quest for Sovereignty, we can continually grow in this wisdom. Enriching possibilities await us in unexpected places. Worlds are waiting.
