"Illuminated Naga Kanya"
7:00pm

Naga Kanya lit by sun streaming through the open door

The Photo Friday theme is "Lightness". The participants are evenly divided between 'lightness' of weight and 'lightness' of illumination. It's the time of year when sunset light streams in nicely, illuminating all it touches.

"Happy Joan"
2:51pm

The day began happy, for Julia and I ate out with a friend. The buffet meals at the Q casino offer abundant tasty choices and are very cheap. Then we went walking in West Wetland Park. Nick has been spending all of the cooler months in Yuma for some time now, but had never heard of this lovely park. The creosote bushes are blooming with their small round yellow blooms, and filled the air with their sweetly tar-like fragrance, which we all inhaled deeply.

After this excursion, I had some more adventure. After much research, I'd determined that Adobe Acrobat and Photoshop are indeed compatible with Windows 7. I sure didn't want to make this big investment, only to be told they weren't.

So today was the big day. I've got the two programs installed on the new computer, so I'm in business. The 'CS4' program isn't that much different from the CS2 version, so I'm not completely lost. But there are some new things. The 'save for web' feature is really effective. Here are two versions of a photo taken last year at the Nineteenth Annual Colorado River Balloon Crossing:

The first version is a png using only four colors and 'diffusion', and is still very recognizible. It is only 23 K! The second is the 'save for web' jpg version of it, saved at '63' quality. It is only 41K!

I'm pleased!

"Early Morning Thoughts on Art"
4:23am

I lay in bed with thoughts, busy thoughts. The house is cold, which would encourage staying in the warm bed. But the mind is busy. I think to our conversation yesterday morning in the colorful dining room at the casino. Nick was decrying the modern ugly architecture, all utilitarian and precious little beauty. On the wall behind Nick, I saw three abstract paintings, the colors of which echoed the decorating scheme, but basically, they were just blotches, blotches without much apparent order to how they were applied. Nick spoke of the wonder of looking at old art, Botticelli's beautiful Venus rising from the sea on a shell, and asked how the modern blotches can compare to it. "I don't know art, but I know what I like!"

I, admitted that due to a BA in Art History, 'know art', but I STILL know what I like! This 'art' which has no meaning, which does not have Ma'at (balance and truth) as its guiding principle is NOT 'art'. What is art without 'meaning'? This is the product of a decadent age, and I shall be the 'politically incorrect' person and SAY so!
